Biography


Aidan Farrell is an up-and-coming saxophonist in the Greater Los Angeles, CA area who is recognized for his robust tone, technical prowess, and soulful expressiveness. His distinctive approach combines traditional jazz foundations with contemporary sensibilities, creating a voice that honors tradition while striving to innovate. He demonstrates fluency across the jazz spectrum from bebop to modern fusion, blending structure with spontaneous creativity in his improvisations. Though focused primarily on jazz, Aidan's repertoire includes classical, blues, Latin, funk, R&B, soul, rock, pop, and jazz fusion, providing a musical flexibility that brings additional dimension to his improvisation and composition.

Aidan has received numerous accolades, including four DownBeat Student Music Awards and an outstanding soloist distinction from national YoungArts. Aidan also earned spots in selective, audition-based programs such as the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy, Brubeck Jazz Summit, California Jazz Conservatory, Stanford Jazz Institute, and the Vail Jazz Summer Workshop, where he was one of only 12 young musicians selected nationally. 

While he pursues his academic aspirations in college, Aidan performs often as a band leader with the Aidan Farrell Quartet, as a sideman with various bands and ensembles, and as a guest musical artist at venues including Sam First, The Baked Potato, The Broad Stage, Jazz at the G, The Mint, Club 1881, and The Grape.

Throughout his musical career, Aidan has had the privilege of performing with many musical greats and Grammy Award winning artists including Stanley Clarke, Bill Cunliffe, Doug Webb, Roy McCurdy, John Clayton, Joe LaBarbera, Gary Novak, Bob Sheppard, Jimmy Branly, Brandon Fields, Brian Charette, Darek Oles, Danny Carey, Eric Harland, Rodney Whittaker, Mitch Forman, Jimmy Vivino, Larry Koonse, Charles Ruggiero, Mike Gurrola, Janis Mann, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith.

Embarking on his musical studies on the piano at five years old, Aidan built a classical foundation before exploring other genres. His passion for music truly ignited at age 11, when he discovered the saxophone and his love for jazz, finding early inspiration from Stan Getz, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. 

In recent years, Aidan studies privately with renowned saxophonists Doug Webb, Bob Sheppard, and Brandon Fields, and he works closely with Bill Cunliffe, mentors who provide unique perspectives that have challenged him to refine his technical approach while nurturing his distinctive artistic voice. Aidan has also been performing with the SMC Jazz Ensemble directed by Keith Fiddmont and working with Stanley Clarke during his residency at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

Aidan continues to take on exciting new projects and hone his unique sound while expanding his artistic horizons as a performer and composer. He remains dedicated to his greatest passion—performing—as he contributes to the vibrant Los Angeles jazz scene that has been integral to his development as a musician.
